Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions families ask most.

If you don't see your question here, call us. A dedicated care representative picks up.

What is non-skilled home care, and how is it different from home health?

Non-skilled home care covers help with daily living: bathing, dressing, mobility, personal hygiene, and everyday support. It does not include nursing tasks, wound care, or therapy.

Home health is medical care delivered at home by licensed clinicians (RNs, PTs, OTs, speech therapists), typically short term and ordered by a physician.

Bluelake provides non-skilled home care, and we coordinate with home health agencies when both services are involved in your loved one's care plan.

What services do you provide?

Bluelake focuses on a few core services:

  • Personal Care (bathing, dressing, mobility, medication reminders)
  • Family Caregiver Program (get paid to care for a loved one)
  • Respite Care
  • Community Living Supports

See our Services page for full descriptions of each.

Do you accept Medicaid?

Yes. Bluelake accepts Michigan Medicaid through several programs and Medicaid health plans (MCOs), and we help families navigate eligibility and enrollment. We also accept private pay and long-term care insurance.

What Michigan Medicaid programs work with Bluelake?

Bluelake works with these Michigan Medicaid programs:

  • MI Choice Waiver - long-term care services for adults who qualify for nursing home level of care but want to stay home.
  • Home Help Program - assistance with personal care for Michigan Medicaid beneficiaries.
  • MI Health Link - integrated Medicare and Medicaid program for dually eligible adults in select counties.
  • Community Living Supports - support services delivered through Community Mental Health agencies.

Eligibility and benefits vary by program and county. Call us and we will help you understand which program may apply to your situation.

How much does private-pay home care cost in Michigan?

Costs vary based on the hours, the level of care needed, and your location in Michigan. Most families budget hourly, and Medicaid-funded care follows the rules of your specific program.

Rather than quote a generic number, we provide a clear written quote when you speak with a care representative, based on your specific situation. There is no long-term contract.

How do I get started?

Three steps:

  • Call or submit the form. Use the contact page.
  • Speak with a care representative. We talk through your needs and build a plan. No cost, no obligation.
  • Care begins. We match a caregiver to your loved one and start, often within the same week.
How are caregivers vetted?

Every Bluelake caregiver goes through:

  • State and federal background checks
  • Reference verification
  • License or certification verification, where applicable
  • Onboarding training plus ongoing education on safety, body mechanics, and infection control
Can I choose my caregiver?

Yes. We match caregivers to your loved one based on care needs, schedule, and personality. You meet the caregiver before care begins and you have a say in the match.

What if my caregiver isn't a good fit?

Just call us. We will arrange a different caregiver, often within a day or two. A good fit matters as much as a good plan, and we never charge a fee to switch caregivers.

Are caregivers insured and bonded?

Yes. Bluelake carries general liability and professional liability insurance, workers' compensation for our caregivers, and bonding. We are happy to share proof of coverage on request.

Can I be paid to care for my family member?

Often, yes. Through Michigan Medicaid, a family member can be hired and paid to provide the care they are already giving. Bluelake handles the enrollment, training, and payroll.

Our Family Caregiver Program is open to families across Michigan. Ask us and we will walk you through eligibility.

What areas do you serve?

Bluelake serves families across all of Michigan. See our Service Area page for details.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

Most private-pay shifts carry a small minimum (typically 3 to 4 hours) so we can deliver meaningful, unhurried care. Medicaid-funded hours follow the rules of your specific program. We will walk through the details when you speak with a care representative.
